A huge win to the Mores down at Marby yesterday. This was Strathmore's first ever win away at Marby since their promotion in 2008.
Strathmore started with a strong breeze and not for missing a few chances could have been leading by more at quarter time. Doering kicked two early as well as a couple of near misses and one on the full, but it was clear that Marby were struggling to quell his influence.
Marby looked like they could break the game open with a couple of quick goals mid way through the second, yet the Mores managed to hit back with the game becoming an arm wrestle. Doering continued his dominance up forward, kicking another two goals to have 4 by half time. Joel Reynolds and Adam Winter provided good support up forward and Matty Fitzgerald was dominant in the middle.
The third term saw Strathmore pile the pressure on with 3 consecutive goals. Adam Winter really lifted along with the Mores backline. Defensive generals Richard Little and Ty Zantuck were terrific down back consistently taking strong marks and their cool heads under pressure helped set up victory in the third.
The game had lost its sting by mid way through the last as the Mores kicked away to a comfortable victory. Digby had rotated his running players a lot in the first half and Strathmore clearly had the fresher legs and fitter bodies in the last stanza. Across the board Strathmore seemed to have a lot more run with the likes of Knight, Foulds and Stuadt providing good pressure and intensity throughout the match. The Mores stars all had good games with Winter impressing in the ruck in the absence of Digby and Daniel Jones and Reynolds, Groth, O'Brien and May all contributing. Doering and Matty Fitzgerald were dominant with Fitzy the clear stand out over the four quarters.
For Marby their were very few clear winners on the day although Aisake O'Halpin fought hard in the ruck and you could not fault Ayres' determination. They really are a team that is depleted with the likes of Buttiegieg, Livington, Laverde, Stewart, Sam Hunt, Barling, Boyd, McKenzie, Matt Towner, Josh Jones and Brendan Hollow missing from their line-up it is understandable that they are dropping games. Nonetheless, their biggest weakness is lack of run which really was exposed again yesterday. Obviously it would be stupid to write them off but all year they have seemed a little light on for genuine line breakers. They really missed Laverde as he does give them an extra dimension in midfield.
Strathmore will take a lot of confidence from this win especially given they did it without Digby, Jones and Harvey. The Mores have all the makings of a premiership team. They have got the star players and the toughness and depth needed to go the distance. They have leaders all over the ground which will be vital in finals. The other interesting thing is they seem to be able to play games on their terms. Yesterday, like against Aberfeldie earlier in the year, they manged to control the tempo of the game for long periods and then strike when the time is right. It was a very composed victory.
Final Score:
Marby 9.10 (64)
Strathmore - 15.10 (100)
Best players:
Marby: O'Halpin, Ayres, Bailey, Broadbent, Crawford
Strathmore: M Fitzgerald, Doering, Winter, Little, Reynolds, Groth, Knight, Reynolds, Zantuck
