Former North Melbourne listed player Brayden Norris has signed with Aberfeldie FC. Another great young pick up for Abers to help further boost their midfield stocks in 2012.

How has the preseason shaped up at abers? Have the new recruits slotted in well? Has a captain been announced after Rabee Houcher's departure?

All recruits to the club have slotted in really well - all cracking blokes too!
What's been most pleasing has been the return of former juniors Mango, Fanning and Sharp! As expected Mango and Fanning have been super impressive not only in terms of quality but experience also.. Sharpy has been impressive also, he'll fly under the radar this year and be a great addition to midfield/forward stocks given his inside ability and has class!
Practice games 17th March - Cobram (away) 25th March - St. Marys (away) 31st March - Sunbury (away) and under lights apparently

Abers had good hit out at Cobram. Our seconds were way too strong and the seniors were in control most of the day after establishing an early lead. Mal Michael along with a number of the new recruits played well with the only downside another injury concern to Ryan Allen. Great to see Ryan Edwards playing his first game in after missing all last season. Apparently the umpiring by AD left the old boy a bit worse off!

Following on from their practice match against St Mary's down at Skilled Stadium last week, Aberfeldie FC played Sunbury at Sunbury on the weekend. At Skilled the margin was around 8 goals though the game was played over 6 quarters with reserves and seniors playing. Fanning, Hine, Zac Hislop were all said to have played well.
In Sunbury the format was a regular 4 quarters with Sunbury getting up by 3 goals. Again Mal Michael was impressive following on from his form shown at Cobram. Other notable contributors were both Cattapans, Zac O'Brien, Zac and Jacob Hislop, Borg and Craven. Early signs suggest Abers could take a little while to gel.

David Fanning is pretty underdone compared to his usual VFL standard, as he has an interrupted pre season. He was clearly Abers best player on the weekend, which is scary as he will only get better!!

It was a predictably tough hitout at Clifton Park between arch rivals Aberfeldie FC and Essendon Doutta Stars. Following on from a narrow loss to newly promoted Pascoe Vale, Douttas Stars' coach Marcus 'Billy' Barham said Abers would give him a good idea as to where his team stands in the competition. Aberfeldie coach, John McMillan, indicated that he wanted his team to continue on from their good showing in the contested ball against Strathmore and had no doubts that Douttas would provide a great opportunity for a tough contest.
As you would expect Douttas came out with plenty of run and had a lot of the play in the first quarter but only managing to put one goal on the board. They entered their forward 50 on a number of ocassions only for Abers' defence led by Mal Michael continually denying them scoring opportunites. A little more composure around goals would have seen Douttas a lot closer at quarter time, but it was Abers who eventually managed to pull away overcoming some inaccurate kicking to hold a 3 goal cushion at the first break.
Abers continued to kick away in the second term with Douttas still trying hard for little reward. The skills of Aberfeldie started to show on the scoreboard with a terrific worked goal from Lachy Hutchesson the highlight of the quarter. At the main break, Abers held a comfortable six goal lead.
The second half had lost a little bit of the intensity of the first with both teams making skill errors and showing signs of fatigue. Douttas made it very difficult for Abers to finish the game as a contest, tackling and contesting well but clearly lacking forward options. A brilliant individual goal from Robbie Hicks was met with a quick reply from Abers to quell any threat of a comeback. A switch to the forward line allowed Daniel Mangan to kick a long goal on a tough angle, further boosting his claims for best on ground.
The final term was much like the thrid with Douttas refusing to roll over. The Stars would take solice from the fact they only lost the second half by 8 points. The determination and fitness of the Stars is defintiely a positive though with so many young bodies it may be difficult to maintain their levels of effort over the whole season. A major problem will be kicking a winning score as they lacked marking targets up forward despite a decent amount of forward entries.
A lot of credit has to go to the Abers defence which absorbed a lot of pressure and consistently denied Douttas scoring chances. Damian Peverill and Dave Fanning were again very impressive in the middle of the ground but Abers will also be pleased with the number of contributors across the whole ground including another promising performance from Courtney Johns and a good debut from Johnno Mullins.
Best players:
Abers - Michael, Mangan, Peverill, Fanning, Hutchesson, Norris
Douttas - Lynch, Kahlefeldt, Gribben, Morris, McDonald

Another fantastic game of tough EDFL footy between Aberfeldie FC and Avondale Heights in the inaugural ANZAC Day fixture. The luncheon before the game was extremely well organised by Avondale with guest speakers Micky O'Loughlin, Chris Johnson, Courtney Johns and Abers coach John McMillan. The catering and MC work were also very good so hopefully they got a good return from a well run pre-match function.
The 3 day break and wet weather conditions arguably suited the Heights given they were the underdogs. With their season on the line and the added emotion of the day Avondale showed early that they were going to make things tough for Abers. Micky O'Loughlin, playing in a one-off game, showed his class right from the start, gliding in front of a one-out dual to take a mark and attacking contests to show he meant business. Though his first set-shot missed, the resulting kick-out allowed Chris Johnson to intercept and goal to get Avondale fired up. Kicking with a moderate wind, Abers managed to gain the ascendency to have a two goal lead at quarter time. Sam Keenan was dominant in the ruck all day using his superior strength to continually give Avondale an advantage in the stoppages. Tom Hislop was an inspiration for Abers throughout and had good support from Peverill and Norris in midfield.
The Heights produced an inspired second quarter to lead at the main break by 7 points. Micky O'Loughlin was clearly their main threat up forward and continually marked and goaled to give the Heights genuine hope of victory. He had lost none of his pace or goal-sense and caused plenty of headaches for the Abers defence though the Heights struggled to find another avenue to goal all day.
Kicking with the wind in the third term Abers produced a dominant display but poor finishing allowed Avondale to still be within 3 goals going into the last term. Tom Hislop, Peverill, Craven and Mal Michael were all instrumental in opening up a gap on the Heights, yet you sensed Avondale were going to come home strong.
After kicking the first goal the Heights were right in the contest and had every chance kicking with the wind. The game was locked in an arm wrestle until Xavier Clarke hesitated enough to allow Tommy Hislop to steal possession and kick to Johns one-out. The big man marked strongly and then ran on to an open goal to give Abers the momentum. A couple more hard-fought goals to Abers effectively won the game though Avondale fought right to the end. Same Keenan and Tom Hislop shared the medal for the players who best showed the ANZAC spirit and nobody could have argued with the recipients who were the clear stand outs for their respective teams on the day.
So an absolutely fantastic day and full credit to Avondale for organising it. It will hopefully be a permanent fixture in EDFL as the introduction to the game with the Last Post and a minutes silence was very moving. The cup won by Aberfeldie is an impressive trophy which was well earned.
Best players:
Avondale – Keenan, O’Loughlin, Johnson,
Abers – T Hislop, Peverill, Craven, Michael
Final Score:
Avondale – 11.6-72
Aberfeldie – 14.13-97

Very accurate assessment Julian. Abers met an Avondale side inspired by a brilliant leader in Chris Johnson playing his 1st game of the year - with the added bonus of Micky O who was brilliant at full forward. They made Avondale a far better side so Abers winning margin when compared to rounds 1&2, whilst seemingly modest, perhaps was better than it seemed, given the Heights would all have lifted for the big occasion. Also great to see big Jules Suarez in crowd fresh from his 9 goal haul at new club Tooradin last Saturday - and big Jordan Florance - could he be returning to the Two Blues in the near future?

A dominant performance by Abers yesterday defeating Oak Park by 6 goals in the wet. Abers got out to a three goal lead at quarter time and if not for wasteful conversion would have wrapped up the game by half time. Oak Park tried to rattle Abers at the very first bounce, Hooper coming off the line to take out O'Brien, but it seemed to have the opposite affect with the two blues dominating the contested ball all day. The Oakers managed to stay within touching distance most of the game without ever threatening to overturn the margin.
A number of off the ball incidents took away from the game as a spectacle. The umpires had a really tough job and did well to stop the fighting escalating.
The Abers backline were fantastic, with Oakers managing about one goal from a mark inside 50 all day. Overall, it was a great result with the final margin very kind to Oakers due to Abers inaccurate kicking at goal. Considering the betling Oakers gave Abers last time the teams met this is a big result for the two blues and shows they have closed the gap on last year's grand finalists.
The signs for Oakers are not so good as they as yet have been unable to capture their form of last year. The major losses of Lord, Sciliano, Higgs, Clarke Raso, Mills etc as well as their coach are understandably having significant effect. They still have fantastic players in Pascu and co. but look a fair way off Strathmore and Greenvale at this stage. Oakers will have a fair idea of where they stand in two weeks time against the high flying Jets.
FINAL SCORE:
Aberfeldie: 13.19 - 97
Oak Park 8.13 - 61
Best players:
Aberfeldie: Craven, Michael, T.Hislop, Peverill, Sharp, Houli etc
Oak Park: L.Ryan, J.Smith, A.Smith, Pascu,

A tough hit out between Abers and Marby at Clifton Park on the weekend. The Lions started brightly kicking the first goal but Abers gained control with the aid of a strong wind to lead by four goals at the first break. The second quarter was always going to be crucial as Marby needed to hit back kicking with the breeze, but a monumental defensive effort allowed the Two Blues to win the quarter by 1 point and go into half-time wth a 27 point lead. Any hope of a Marby revival were dashed in the third term, the margin getting to 45 points at three quarter time. Late goals to the Lions kicking with the breeze managed to peg the gap back to 25 points at the final whistle, but it was another commanding performance by Abers who seemed comfortable contolling the tempo and protecting their lead after quarter time.
After his nine goals against Avondale Luke Livingstone could only manage one major in tough conditions for big forwards. Adam El Houli blanketed the star forward for most of the game though his one goal came when Houli had moved into the middle of the ground. The wind made it tough for clean possessions though Hayden Skipworth excelled in the conditions kicking three goals to be Abers clear stand out. Strong perfomances from O'Brien and Z.Hislop, who also kicked 3, were very encouraging for the Two Blues.
For Marby Heath Ayres was instrumental as you would expect. He had good support from Brendan Hollow and Gareth Bowes who kicked two goals. Marby will be expected to bounce back against Keilor next week though the Blues will be desperate to post their second win to keep thier fading finals hopes alive. The race for finals is definitely wide open with Pascoe Vale looking like genuine contenders going on results.
FINAL SCORE:
Aberfeldie - 12.11 - 83
Maribyrnong Park - 9.4 - 58
Best players:
Abers - Skipwroth, Z.Hislop, O'Brien, El Houli, Michael
Marby - Ayres, Hollow, Bowes, Kelly
